New Royal Children's Hospital Reaches Structural Completion
The new Royal Children’s Hospital in Victoria has celebrated a significant construction milestone with Bovis Lend Lease today celebrating the ‘topping off’ or structural completion of the buildings.
The last major concrete pour of the three buildings that make up stage one of the new Royal Children’s Hospital, the Inpatient Building, the East Building and the West Building was completed this month. This achievement was celebrated with the traditional placing of a tree, a Norfolk Island Pine (araucaria heteyophylla) on the top of the East building. In a gesture symbolic of the project’s requirement to ensure no net loss of parkland, the tree will eventually be planted in the adjoining park.
Victorian Premier, John Brumby, joined members of the Bovis Lend Lease construction team and the Children’s Health Partnership (CHP) on the top of the East Building to mark the milestone.
Bovis Lend Lease General Manager – Victoria/South Australia/Tasmania, Mr Geoff Moore, said that the Bovis Lend Lease team was particularly proud to be delivering such a significant part of Victoria’s infrastructure.
“This is a vital project for the state. Bovis Lend Lease has a significant track record in the delivery of health infrastructure throughout Australia, with major hospital projects in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. We are utilising this expertise in the Australian health care sector, as well as international experience, to deliver an outstanding facility for the people of Victoria,” Mr Moore said.
The project is being delivered under the state’s Partnerships Victoria framework by the CHP consortium. The consortium comprises International Public Partnerships as sponsors, Bovis Lend Lease as contractor, Spotless Group as facilities manager and architects Billard Leece, Bates Smart and HKS (US).
The $1 billion project currently employs 1,000 construction workers on site and this number is expected to grow to 2,000 as construction peaks in the next six months. There are also 230 people involved in managing the design and delivery of the project.
