Aurora Unwrapped to Reveal a Glimpse of Brisbane’s Heritage
Brisbane will get its first glimpse of landmarks old and new this week when the protective covering is removed from the historic 117-year-old façade incorporated into the state-of-the-art Aurora apartment tower being developed by Amalgamated Property Group.

The unveiling follows an extensive restoration of the 117-year-old Queensland Heritage Council-listed façade of the former Queensland Country Life building.

Queensland General Manager of Bovis Lend Lease, Mr Peter Bates, said the Aurora team applied some Brisbane-first techniques to overcome the unique challenges of the historic restoration.

“The historical façade was shrink-wrapped and the technique which followed was an environmentally-friendly water-induction sandblasting to complete restoration without risk to workers, pedestrians or the façade itself,” Mr Bates said.

“While it was a challenging project, it has also been an excellent opportunity to be able to not only preserve this piece of history but to incorporate a piece of Brisbane’s heritage into an innovative new development.

The façade dating back to 1888, was originally part of a warehouse complex and the official entrance to the former Port of Brisbane. The new role of the façade is as part of the 217-metre Aurora development which features 478 units and at 69 floors, will be the tallest residential tower in Brisbane.

“This project represents a link between old and new in Australia’s most rapidly changing and dynamic city,” Mr Bates said.

“Bovis Lend Lease is proud to have returned the Queensland Country Life façade to its former glory ensuring the preservation of a vital part of Brisbane’s heritage,” he said.

Due for completion in the second quarter of 2006, the Aurora will be the tallest residential building in Brisbane. Bovis Lend Lease has recently extended their tall building experience by being appointed as construction consultants on another future Gold Coast landmark, the 77-story ‘Soul’ tower for Juniper Developments.
